Trenchless Pipe Installation: What It Is and Why It Matters

How We Keep Your Lawn from Looking Like this

As a residential sprinkler installation company, one of the most common questions we encounter is whether or not the installation process is going to rip up your healthy lawn and cause turf damage.

While that may have been the case with traditional trenching technology, trenchless pipe installation using a vibratory plow allows for your sprinkler system to be installed without causing damage to your yard.

For you to better understand what vibratory plow irrigation is and why it matters, we’ve put together a quick guide below.

The Ditch Witch

We use a Ditch Witch brand vibratory plow attachment (left side of this picture) to install sprinkler piping with minimal damage to your lawn.

The traditional trencher attachment (right side of this picture) creates a deeper trench when utilized.

How Trenchers and Vibratory Plows Differ

Whether you’re in the market for irrigation system installation or dealing with the aftermath of a pipe bursting, a professional is going to need to access the area underneath your landscape.

When a trencher is used, the equipment creates a deep trench in your yard to lay the materials, such as pipe and cable, underneath the soil. Once the irrigation pipes are in place, the original soil is placed back on top of the newly installed pipes.

As a result, the pipe or water lines are installed, but you’re often left with turf damage that can be quite an eyesore and take time to heal.

Instead of ripping apart your yard, vibratory plow irrigation installs the pipe and cable using an alternative method.

The equipment has a vibrator component attached to the rear of the plow. This vibrating component is fastened with a blade that cuts into the earth using quick movements to pull the materials in place underneath the soil.

Because the pipe or water lines are installed through a small incision in the ground, trenchless sprinkler installation allows for minimal damage that preserves the look of your landscape.

In short: trenchless piping using a vibratory plow is more efficient, cost-effective, and less damaging than a traditional trencher!

Why Trenchless Irrigation Is Better for Your Yard

During the use of a vibratory plow, the vibrating blade creates a long, extremely narrow slit in your yard where the pipe or cable is put into place. Instead of tearing up your healthy lawn and causing major turf damage, a vibratory plow allows you to get the pipe or irrigation system installation you need without the hassle of fixing your yard afterward — which is a major advantage since a trencher leaves a large area of soil where the grass was ripped up.

Depending on soil conditions, trenchless installation often leaves no more than a small slit along the path of the blade where the pipe and cable were laid.

Vibratory Plowing: The End Result

A sprinkler installation using a vibratory plow should result in an unintrusive, underground sprinkler system with no damage done to your healthy lawn.
